Working During the Pandemic

Posted: 04/08/2020 12:00pm

Working at an essential store has caused my life to be directly affected by COVID-19.

Lowe’s Home Improvement is considered to be essential because of our plumbing department and other departments that are important to keep a house running.

I, however work in the paint department which is not essential to anyone’s health or living.

It has come to the point where we have fiberglass barrios around the front end of out desk to keep us from coming in contact with the customers. Seems fair, but there are three other ends of the paint desk and customers still get in our faces to speak to us.

I feel blessed to have a job right now while others are unemployed but also I believe

if we have to go to the extent of putting up barriers to keep from contact then the store should be shut down or only work the people who actually work in the essential departments.

The tactics that are used in the store to reduce contact isn’t really helpful because Lowe’s employees are required to “seek out the customers” and walk around the isles to make sure no one needs help finding anything.

It is highly unreasonable to expect us to shout across the store from 6 feet away to ask a customer if they need any help, especially in the paint department.

People also get offended if you try to step back to keep the social distance because they believe that you are accusing them of having the virus.

Or, on the other hand, if you step closer to see or hear what they are asking about, they will scoot back to keep the distance from you.
